Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses
Two French Quarter house museums that make architecture answer harder historical questions.
Hermann-Grima and Gallier are among the city's most useful historic houses because they do not stop at pretty rooms. The tours bring architecture, domestic labor, urban slavery, technology, and family life into the same frame.
The houses are close enough to build into a Quarter day, but they deserve more attention than a quick photograph through a gate. Book a tour and let the interiors correct whatever assumptions the street has already encouraged.
These are good museums for people who like old buildings and better museums for people willing to ask who maintained them.
