Casamento's
The only oyster house in New Orleans the way the early 20th century imagined one — tile from floor to ceiling, closed in summer, no compromises.
Uptown
Uptown on Magazine, family-owned since 1919, closed every June through August because the Casamento family will not serve oysters in months without an R in the name. The interior is white tile top to bottom, scrubbed daily, exactly as it was when it opened.
The oyster loaf — fried oysters on housemade pan bread, a form lost almost everywhere else — is the order, with a dozen on the half shell to start and a cold beer. The shuckers work the front bar and they are fast. The oyster stew is the cold-weather alternative.
Cash only or was last time; check before you go. No reservations, ever. Closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The line moves. Worth the streetcar ride down St. Charles and the walk to Magazine, and worth planning your trip around the calendar.
