Mandina's
A Mid-City Creole-Italian neighborhood restaurant with the emotional force of a family table.
Mid-City
Mandina's is what people mean when they say neighborhood restaurant in New Orleans: gumbo, trout almandine, red gravy, fried seafood, families, regulars, and a dining room that does not require a narrative consultant.
The food is not delicate and should not be. Order like someone raised here might: a bowl, a plate, something fried, something with sauce. The Canal streetcar makes it easy enough from downtown, which is useful because the restaurant feels farther from the Quarter psychologically than it is geographically.
Go when you want comfort with local grammar. Mandina's is not trying to become new, which is one of its strengths.
