Parkway Bakery & Tavern

Mid-City

On the bend of Bayou St. John, in a building that has been a bakery, a tavern, and now both. Closed for years before the current owners reopened it in 2005, restored in a way that did not erase what it was. The roast beef po-boy is the order — slow-cooked, "debris" gravy soaked into the bread, dressed, on Leidenfrost French bread that holds up to all of it.

The fried shrimp and the alligator sausage are also legitimate. Surly Girl, the housemade root beer, is a better answer than you'd expect. Patio seating in the back is pleasant in shoulder seasons; the inside dining room is loud and good.

Order at the counter, sit down with a number, eat with both hands. A short cab from the Quarter or a longer streetcar ride; pair with City Park if you're already in Mid-City.
