Pascal's Manale

Uptown

Napoleon Avenue Uptown, white-tablecloth Italian-Creole that has been a neighborhood institution since 1913. The BBQ shrimp — head-on, swimming in butter, black pepper, and Worcestershire, invented in this kitchen in 1954 — is what to order, with French bread for the sauce and a bib if they offer one.

The oyster bar at the front is excellent and can seat you without a reservation when the dining room can't, with the same shuckers working the same bar for decades. Italian dishes are honest and good but not the reason to come.

Lunch is the easier reservation; dinner books out further. A cab or rideshare neighborhood — not walking distance from the Quarter, and parking is its own problem. Treat the round trip as part of the cost.
