Tipitina's
The Uptown shrine to Professor Longhair and the rest of the city's funk and R&B canon.
Uptown
Tipitina's was named after a Professor Longhair song, founded by fans who wanted Fess to have a place to play in his last years, and reclaimed in 2018 by the Neville-adjacent musicians who couldn't watch it become a corporate venue. The building's history is in the floor.
Sunday Cajun fais do-do is the easiest entry point — afternoon dance party, all ages, dollar beers, real Cajun bands. Friday and Saturday night shows skew funk, brass, and rock. Check the calendar; the booking is mostly excellent.
The room holds about 1,000 and there are no bad spots. Cabs from the Quarter run about $20. This is a working music venue, not a tourist attraction, and the locals don't pretend otherwise — which is exactly what makes it worth the trip.
